• Thread two upper threads – one on the left and one on the right side of the tension disc – so that each needle has its own thread feed.

Yes, the free-arm function is available for sewing. Simply remove the free-arm cover to access the narrower sewing area. This makes it ideal for sewing tubular and closed projects such as sleeves, trouser legs, cuffs, and children's clothing.

For embroidery, the embroidery module is attached to the machine. Therefore, the free-arm function is not available while embroidering.

For your first embroidery project with the b59, you only need a few additional materials:

1. Embroidery thread for the upper thread
   Use high-quality embroidery thread. Polyester and rayon embroidery threads are especially popular because they deliver beautiful embroidery results and are available in a wide range of colors.
2. Bobbin thread
   For the underside of the embroidery, we recommend using a dedicated embroidery bobbin thread. It is softer and finer than regular sewing thread, ensuring clean thread formation and consistent embroidery results.
3. Embroidery stabilizer
   Embroidery stabilizer supports the fabric during stitching and helps prevent stretching, puckering, or shifting. Different types of stabilizers are suitable depending on the fabric and project. You can find more information about the different types of embroidery stabilizers in the b59 user manual.
4. Embroidery needle
   For optimal embroidery results, we recommend using a BERNINA 130/705 H-S70 embroidery needle. It is specially designed for embroidery and ensures smooth thread flow. A matching BERNINA embroidery needle set is already included with your b59.
5. Suitable fabric
   Almost any fabric can be embroidered. However, for your first projects, we recommend stable, non-stretch fabrics, as they are easier to hoop and embroider.
6. Embroidery hoop
   Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together in the appropriate embroidery hoop. This keeps your project stable during stitching and ensures accurate embroidery results.

Tip for beginners:
For the best results, we recommend stitching a small test design on a fabric scrap before starting your project. This allows you to check that the thread, stabilizer, and fabric work well together.

The b59 gives you plenty of room for big ideas. Its maximum embroidery area is 120 x 180 mm (4.7" x 7"). 

For even larger designs and creative combinations, the included multi-position embroidery hoop provides an embroidery area of up to 120 x 300 mm (4.7" x 11.8"). It is ideal for borders, lettering, and larger designs that extend across multiple embroidery areas.

If you would like to customize an existing embroidery design, you can enlarge, reduce, rotate, or mirror it directly on the touchscreen or in the StitchDirect app. The b59 allows you to resize designs by up to 20% larger or smaller without the need for additional software.

The b59 opens up a colorful world of embroidery possibilities and supports a range of creative techniques. Freestanding lace, appliqué, fringe embroidery and CutWork designs can all be done with the b59.

Yes, absolutely. Using the StitchDirect App, you can import your own embroidery designs directly to the b59 – no additional software required.

The b59 is compatible with many common embroidery file formats. You can load and use designs in the following formats: EXP, PES, DST, PEC, PCS, SEW, JEF, VP3, VIP und HUS. In most cases, there’s no need to convert files before you start stitching.

The native file format for the b59 is the BERNINA EXP format, which includes three related files:

• An .exp file containing the actual stitch data
• A .bmp file with a preview of the design
• An .inf file with color information

If the .inf file is missing, the design will still display – but possibly in standard colors rather than the intended color scheme.

If an update is available, your b59 will notify you directly on the screen as soon as the machine is switched on and connected to WiFi. A yellow exclamation mark will appear on the Settings icon on the home screen.

To make sure you never miss new features or improvements, there are several other ways to stay informed about firmware updates for your b59:

• Registered machine:
  If you have registered your b59, you will automatically receive an email whenever a new firmware update becomes available.
• Visit the bernette website regularly:
  You can always find the latest firmware version for your model in the Support section
• Contact your local dealer:
  Many dealers actively inform customers about firmware updates or offer assistance with the installation process.

Keep your machine up to date regularly – this way, you’ll benefit from new features, improvements, and bug fixes.

The bright LED lighting, with two LEDs positioned in two locations, ensures even illumination across the entire sewing and embroidery area. This allows you to see fine details and colors accurately – even in low room lighting.

With the b59, you set the pace yourself – from slow and precise all the way up to a maximum speed of 800 stitches per minute.

Here’s how it works:

• Foot control: The harder you press, the faster the machine sews.
• Speed control slider: With the slider on the front, you can continuously limit the maximum speed. For example, you can set the machine to sew slowly even with the foot control fully pressed – perfect for detailed work or when kids are sewing.
• Start/Stop button: The b59 can also be operated without a foot control. The maximum speed you set with the slider is automatically applied.

Whether slow and precise or fast and powerful – with the b59, you’re always in control of your speed.

The b59 uses 130/705 H needle system needles. Depending on the type of fabric and material, you should choose the appropriate needle size to achieve clean results and ensure optimal machine performance.

As a general guideline:

• Needle size 70–75 for lightweight fabrics
• Needle size 80–90 for medium-weight fabrics
• Needle size 100–120 for heavyweight fabrics

In addition to different needle sizes, there are also specialized needle types for different materials and techniques, such as universal needles, jersey needles, jeans needles, and embroidery needles.

To help you get started right away, the b59 already includes a BERNINA 130/705 H Universal Needle Set and a BERNINA 130/705 H-E Embroidery Needle Set. This gives you the right basic equipment for both sewing and embroidery projects.
